Nakshatra: Your Vedic Birth Star and Soul Blueprint

The nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology — a division of the zodiac into 27 equal segments of 13°20' each, traced by the Moon's daily journey across the sky. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a presiding deity, a symbol, and a rich body of psychological and spiritual meaning. Where the Western Sun sign describes your conscious ego, the nakshatra of your natal Moon reveals your soul's deepest nature, your subconscious instincts, and the quality of energy you carry at the most fundamental level. In Jyotish, knowing someone's nakshatra is more important than knowing their zodiac sign.

Nakshatra and the Dasha System

The nakshatra of your natal Moon is the starting point of the Vimshottari Dasha — the Vedic planetary period system. Depending on which nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth and how far through that nakshatra it had progressed, you begin life in a particular planetary period. The remaining years of that period are calculated proportionally based on the Moon's degree within the nakshatra. This is why Moon nakshatra accuracy, which requires birth time and location, is essential for correct Dasha calculations.
