Understanding Your Sun Sign in Astrology

The Sun sign is the most widely known placement in astrology — it's what people mean when they ask, "What's your sign?" Your Sun sign is determined by where the Sun was located in the tropical zodiac on the day you were born. It changes sign roughly every 30 days as the Earth orbits the Sun. The Sun represents your core identity, the conscious self, your will, and the central narrative of your life. It describes what you are actively becoming, the qualities you are here to express and develop.

How Sun Signs Are Determined

The tropical zodiac divides the ecliptic — the Sun's apparent path around Earth — into twelve equal 30° segments named after the classical constellations. The Sun enters Aries at the March equinox, Taurus around April 20, Gemini around May 21, and so on through the calendar year. If you were born on a cusp date (within a day or two of a sign change), your exact birth time and year are needed to confirm which side of the boundary you fall on. Swami Horoscope uses Swiss Ephemeris for precision to 0.1°, so even cusp births are resolved correctly.

The Sun Through the Twelve Signs

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19): Initiative, courage, and a pioneering spirit. Aries energy is direct and unafraid of new beginnings.

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20): Steadiness, sensuality, and a love of beauty and security. Taurus builds lasting value slowly and surely.

Gemini (May 21–Jun 20): Curiosity, versatility, and communication. Gemini thrives on information, connection, and mental stimulation.

Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22): Nurturing, intuition, and emotional depth. Cancer is the sign of home, family, and protective instincts.

Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22): Creativity, generosity, and the need to shine. Leo brings warmth, leadership, and a theatrical flair.

Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22): Discernment, service, and precision. Virgo excels at analysis, improvement, and attending to detail.

Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22): Balance, diplomacy, and aesthetics. Libra seeks harmony in relationships and beauty in form.

Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21): Depth, transformation, and intensity. Scorpio investigates the hidden layers of life and is unafraid of darkness.

Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21): Expansion, philosophy, and optimism. Sagittarius pursues meaning through travel, study, and big-picture thinking.

Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19): Ambition, discipline, and long-term mastery. Capricorn scales mountains through sustained effort.

Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18): Innovation, idealism, and community. Aquarius breaks convention in service of collective progress.

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20): Empathy, imagination, and spiritual sensitivity. Pisces dissolves boundaries and connects to the universal.

Sun Sign vs Your Full Chart

Sun-sign horoscopes are the simplest and most mass-market form of astrology. They have real value — the Sun is the most powerful celestial body in the chart — but they represent only one layer of your nature. Your Moon sign colours your emotional life. Your rising sign shapes how others first perceive you. Your Mercury sign governs how you think and communicate. A Scorpio Sun with a Sagittarius Moon and Gemini rising will feel and behave very differently from a Scorpio Sun with a Cancer Moon and Capricorn rising.

That said, the Sun sign is never trivial. It describes the themes your soul is actively working to embody in this lifetime. Where the Moon shows what comes naturally, the Sun shows what you are growing into.

Modalities and Elements

The twelve signs are organised into four elements — Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — and three modalities — Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), and Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). Your element describes your fundamental temperament: Fire is enthusiastic and action-oriented, Earth is practical and grounded, Air is intellectual and social, Water is emotional and intuitive. Your modality describes how you engage with change: Cardinal signs initiate, Fixed signs sustain, Mutable signs adapt.
