Natal House Placements: Where Life Plays Out

The twelve houses of the birth chart divide the sky into twelve sectors representing twelve domains of life experience. Unlike the signs — which describe how a planet expresses its energy — the houses describe where in your life that energy is most active. A planet in the 1st house shows its energy most visibly in your personality and physical self. A planet in the 8th house operates in the shadows of transformation, shared resources, and the occult. The combination of a planet's sign (how), house (where), and aspects (with what) creates the full picture of that placement.

The Twelve Houses

1st House (Ascendant): Self, body, personality, first impressions. 2nd House: Personal finances, possessions, self-worth, voice. 3rd House: Communication, siblings, neighbours, short travel, early education. 4th House (IC): Home, family, ancestry, the private self, end of life. 5th House: Creativity, romance, children, play, speculation. 6th House: Daily work, health, service, routines, pets. 7th House (Descendant): Marriage, partnerships, open enemies, contracts. 8th House: Shared resources, death and rebirth, sex, the occult, inheritance. 9th House: Higher education, long-distance travel, philosophy, religion, publishing. 10th House (Midheaven): Career, reputation, authority, public life. 11th House: Friendships, groups, aspirations, social causes, technology. 12th House: Hidden realms, solitude, spirituality, self-undoing, hospitals.

Angular, Succedent, and Cadent Houses

Houses are grouped into three categories. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most powerful — planets here operate with the most visibility and impact on life events. Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) consolidate and develop the themes introduced by the angular houses — they describe resources, pleasures, regeneration, and community. Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) are transitional — they prepare for the next angular house and are associated with learning, service, philosophy, and dissolution.

House Systems

Different house systems divide the sky differently, producing slightly different house cusps. The Placidus system (used by Swami Horoscope) is the most popular in Western astrology; it divides the four quadrants of the chart unequally based on the time it takes for a degree to rise, culminate, and set. Whole Sign houses assign one complete sign to each house, starting from the Ascendant's sign. Equal house systems divide the chart into twelve equal segments. In Vedic astrology, the most common system is also Whole Sign (Rashi Chart), though Bhava charts using unequal houses are also calculated.
