Major Aspects in Astrology: The Geometry of Your Chart
Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in your birth chart, measured in degrees along the ecliptic. They describe how planetary energies interact — whether they blend harmoniously, create productive tension, or reinforce each other's themes. Major aspects are: conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), and opposition (180°). Each has an orb of influence — a range of degrees within which the aspect is considered active. Swami Horoscope uses orbs of 8° for Sun/Moon aspects and 6° for other planet-to-planet major aspects.
The Five Major Aspects
Conjunction (0°, orb 8°): The most powerful aspect. Two planets merge their energies in the same sign and degree. Whether the fusion is harmonious or tense depends on the planets involved — Venus conjunct Jupiter is flowing and abundant; Mars conjunct Saturn can feel like force meeting resistance.
Sextile (60°, orb 6°): An aspect of opportunity and gentle support. The two planets are two signs apart and often in compatible elements. Sextiles offer opportunities that must be actively seized rather than falling automatically into your lap.
Square (90°, orb 8°): The aspect of challenge and growth through friction. The two planets are three signs apart and usually in incompatible modes or elements. Squares are the most motivating aspect in the chart — they create the inner tension that produces achievement.
Trine (120°, orb 8°): The aspect of ease and natural talent. The two planets are four signs apart and always in the same element. Trines represent gifts that flow effortlessly — so effortlessly, in fact, that they can be taken for granted and underdeveloped.
Opposition (180°, orb 8°): The aspect of polarity and integration. Two planets in opposite signs pull in different directions. The key to opposition energy is finding the middle path: not choosing one pole over the other, but embodying both in balance.
Minor Aspects
Beyond the five major aspects, several minor aspects add nuance: the semi-sextile (30°) and quincunx or inconjunct (150°) involve signs with nothing in common — no shared element, mode, or polarity — creating a relationship that requires constant adjustment and cannot be easily resolved. The semi-square (45°) and sesqui-square (135°) are minor tension aspects related to the square. The quintile (72°) and bi-quintile (144°) are associated with creative talent and unique gifts. Minor aspects are typically used with tight orbs of 2–3°.
Chart Patterns
When multiple planets form a geometric configuration together, they create chart patterns with specific meanings: a Grand Trine (three planets in trine to each other, all in the same element) creates an enclosed circuit of ease in that element's domain; a T-square (two planets in opposition with a third squaring both) concentrates intense energy at the focal planet; a Grand Cross (four planets in square and opposition) creates an extraordinary engine of tension that can produce either paralysis or exceptional achievement; a Yod (two planets sextile each other with a third quincunx both) creates an unusual configuration sometimes called the 'Finger of God' — a fated, redirecting energy that demands continuous adjustment.
